CRIC's pilot cities, Pekanbaru and Mataram, will participate in the annual EU-Indonesia Climate Diplomacy Week, in the "Local Authorities as Climate Champions" session on 14th October 2021.
CRIC will join forces with IURC and GCOM SEA, other EU-funded programmes coordinated by UCLG ASPAC, to help amplify the voices of local authorities in climate governance.
From Pekanbaru, Vice Mayor H. Ayat Cahyadi, S.Si will talk about the City's efforts to push sustainable waste management initiatives through community mobilisation and Waste Bank revitalisation. This year, Pekanbaru developed its Waste Management Master Plan as a policy framework that promotes sustainable waste management. The City is rolling out its major initiative to develop Main Waste Bank and a neighbourhood-level Waste Bank to encourage community participation.
While from Mataram, First Assistant of Regional Secretary Mr. Lalu Martawang will share the waste management initiatives through waste to energy conversion. As organic waste reaches 70% of the total waste per day, Mataram plans to convert organic waste to biofuel. The initiative seeks to decrease the local budget allocated for street lighting by generating alternative renewable energy in the long run.
