Three CRIC Pilot Cities, Pekanbaru, Samarinda, and Mataram, have made achievements at the national level by receiving a token of appreciation from the Indonesia Urban Resilience Forum (IURF) for their outstanding contributions to building resilient and sustainable urban environments in their respective regions.
These cities have shown significant dedication to building a resilient future against climate change and natural disasters through effective mitigation and adaptation strategies. In addition, the cities are also considered by the forum as committed to the importance of urban resilience in the face of rapid urbanisation, climate change and natural disasters.
In total,13 Indonesian cities received these prestigious appreciations. Alongside Pekanbaru, Samarinda, and Mataram, the other champion cities include DKI Jakarta, Surabaya, Jambi, Palembang, Semarang, Batam, Palu, Pontianak, Balikpapan, and Bandung. These appreciations were presented at the Urban Resilience Champion held at the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
The representatives of the CRIC cities who received these tokens of appreciation were:
- Pekanbaru: Zarman Candra, Head of the Disaster Management Agency
- Samarinda: Wahyuni Nadjar, Head of the Economics, Natural Resources, Infrastructure and Regional Division, Regional Development Planning and Research Agency (Bapperida)
The Indonesia Urban Resilience Forum gathered over 130 international, national, regional, and city-level decision-makers and development partners. It provided a key platform to understand Indonesia’s urban resilience landscape, showcase lessons from various initiatives, identify priority support areas, and explore financing opportunities for cities.
Organised by the Ministry of National Development Planning/BAPPENAS in partnership with ADB’s Indonesia Resident Mission, Urban Climate Change Resilience Trust Fund (URTF), and the UK FCDO, the forum focused on replicating and scaling up urban climate resilience efforts. Discussions highlighted effective partnerships and future strategies, with contributions from ADB, Nusantara Capital Authority, UK FCDO, and BAPPENAS, showcasing potential collaborations and investments to boost urban resilience in Indonesia.
In addition to serving as a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices in facing various urban challenges in Indonesia, the forum aims to raise awareness and understanding of urban resilience issues, as well as to promote collaboration among various stakeholders in building more resilient and sustainable cities.
