Cities in Indonesia are projected to house at least 72.9% of the total population by 2045. The growth of cities will bring challenges related to efforts to fulfill basic rights and services for cities, especially in the midst of climate change. Climate change has already resulted in an increase in hydrometeorological disasters and this trend is predicted to increase as surface temperatures rise across Indonesia.
This challenge needs to be addressed by city governments by ensuring climate-resilient development planning to reduce the level of vulnerability of cities, reduce potential economic (and non-economic) losses and casualties, and maintain the sustainability of urban ecosystems that are accessible to all citizens. Integrating issues related to climate resilience into urban development planning documents is an initial and strategic step, which is realized through collective actions to increase the resilience capacity of cities in order to mitigate and adapt to the potential impacts of climate change.
